Artist Statement
This series is a culmination of three years of work as a photographer. One of the aspects I love about photography as a medium is that it has the unique ability to capture life’s instantaneous and pure moments. I see Photography as a another tool that I have to express myself and my eunique experiences. I was largely inspired by my best friend, Gerich Curtom. Gerich takes photographs that tell stories about his experiences as a young adult. He lives on his own now and those challanges imform his work, and help to create a narritive about comming of age. In my work I tried to create narritives that describe what it means to go from childhood to being an adulthood. I used color and black and white images depending on the mood I was trying to set. The narritive in these stories is up for the viewer to decide. I believe that some outcomes are not predictable because chance plays a big part in our lives. Studies that follow people as the age often talk about the idea of serendipity. This aspect of life is interesting to me as a person that is about to graduate high school. One of the artists that I looked at prior to starting on this project is photographer Duane Michals. He is a well know photographer that works with idea of narritive. I liked how he used movement in his work. I also liked the mood of the work, and tried to incorperate that in my stories.
